Today on the International Day of the Girl, I want to share with you some wonderful news.

Five and half months ago I left the comfort and security of my executive role in a consulting company to follow my heart and my dreams. I stopped earning a salary and started spending my savings.

I wanted to build a marketplace that brought together independent producers, businesses, artists and not-for-profits that create the best products for girls, people that do not compromise on their values to make an easy profit. I wanted to create a safe haven from the stereotyping, sexualization and commercialization of childhood so prevalent in products targeting girls.

The naysayers asked me:

“Are you sure there are enough businesses and products out there that align with your vision?”

“Are you sure that you can build such a complex marketplace from scratch with so little to invest?”

“Are you sure you are an entrepreneur, a risk taker, do you really have what it takes?”

5.5 months of hard work and many… many new white hairs later I can confidently say that the answers to all those questions are:  YES, YES and YES!

They had another question, one that YOU have to answer:

“Are you sure that there are enough people out there that give a damn, that care enough to buy from these businesses and to support this coalition of dreamers and shakers?”

Only YOU can answer this last question… you can do so by:
1) Sharing our new marketplace with all your friends and family,
2) buying our products,
3) bookmarking our marketplace for your Christmas shopping.

I am so inspired by my amazing partners in crime, they make the world a better place and so can you. Please reward them, they will not let you down.

As for me, I will continue to work very hard to bring more amazing sellers and products onboard and to build more fun features in TowardTheStars. Please do remember that TowardTheStars is a bootstrapped startup business, running on a shoestring budget. Please try not to compare us… yet… with all the other  marketplaces out there. Once we start receiving some sales revenue we will be in a better position to add more fancy bells and whistles.

Today I made one little girl’s dream come true, she is called Inês and she is very happy, I am hoping that this project will enable the dreams of many other girls to come true.

This project and this day dedicated to two very special people:

  • Malala Yousafzai - At the age of 11, Malala  took on the Taliban by giving voice to her dreams. As turbaned fighters swept through her town in northwestern Pakistan in 2009, the tiny schoolgirl spoke out about her passion for education — she wanted to become a doctor  and became a symbol of defiance against Taliban subjugation. On Tuesday, masked Taliban gunmen shoot Malala  in the head and neck. As I write this blog post Malala is in critical condition.
  • Carlos Almeida – My wonderful father, who is no longer with us but that has never left my side.

Welcome to www.TowardTheStars.com  <- Check it out :) what are you waiting for?

Inês Almeida,

Chief Super Hero Wannabe

  • Congratulations on your launch! You are truly an inspiration to me to continue to pursue my graphic design aspirations. I work full time as a K-6 special education teacher. I have been spending my free time developing my “Can-Do Girl!” greeting card line. As a special education teacher, I meet many young girls (and boys) who are failing academically and/or socially; and consequently have limited self esteem. My mission as a teacher and as a designer is to promote the development of self confidence and self empowerment in girls who have to battle narrow minded stereotyping everyday. I am happy to be a part of your venture and to spread the word! –CLB
